Black diamond engagement rings appear to have come of age through the help of popular movies and celebrities. One noteworthy black diamond engagement ring is the 5ct black diamond engagement ring that Mr. Big gave Carrie at the end of the 2010 movie Sex in the City 2. Due to the bold and striking color of Black diamonds, most jewelry designers tend to suggest that they be set in white gold or platinum. While that combination can be truly lovely, it definitely isn’t the only way to go. Rose gold works extremely well with black diamonds! The contrast that is created is both striking and feminine, especially when set with smaller white diamonds. One can take a classic solitaire or halo design and turn into an absolute show stopper while maintaining its timeless beauty and classic elegance. Although altogether less popular, our designers have created exquisite black diamond pieces in yellow gold too. The warmth of the rose / yellow gold against the depth of the stark black diamond creates an enigmatic juxtaposition which is hard to resist. At the end of the day tastes and personalities rule the day, and its important that your jewelry designer understands you & the look that captures your heart! Like white diamonds, black diamonds represent love and commitment. They do however bring something new and different to the table, something deep in your soul that you wish to express… a defiant, bold beauty or the striking elegance of a strong independent woman with something enlightened up her sleeve! However you feel Ladies & Gents, the black diamond is making its mark and is most definitely here to stay!

Is a Black Diamond a ‘Colored’ Diamond?

Black diamonds are not regarded as ‘colored’ or ‘fancy colored’ diamonds at all. They are actually closer in composition to colorless white diamonds than they are to fancy colored diamonds. Fancy colored diamonds come in various colors including pink, blue, green and yellow and they get their unique hues from minerals that they are exposed to while forming. While white diamonds are clear, brilliant, sparkling stones, black diamonds are opaque. This opaqueness is caused by dense inclusions, or clusters of graphite that form inside the diamonds. This high inclusion level causes the diamond to appear black. While white diamonds shine by reflecting light, black diamonds actually absorb light, giving them a unique and increasingly popular marble-like beauty.
Black diamonds are as hard as white diamonds, however the dense inclusions make the diamond more brittle. This also makes them notoriously difficult to cut & polish. This process can be quite lengthy and may take up to a year to cut a single black diamond. So when you wear your unique & beautiful black diamond engagement ring you can be assured that a lot of patience and love went into the cutting of your unique and beautiful gem.
A fine natural-color black diamond is a beautiful stone, with a distinctive look unlike other diamonds. They are more often then not more affordable than clear or white diamonds, adding to their popularity and appeal.
Most of the black diamonds sold for jewelry and engagement rings have been treated to induce their color. Many begin as gray, highly included and fractured diamonds that are subjected to heat or pressure treatment, which graphitizes the fractures, turning them black.
