TOURMALINE JEWELRY

Stone of Wisdom

The History

In the 16th century, Spanish Conquistadors in South America misclassified this fascinating gemstone as an emerald. It took hundreds of years for this error to be corrected. Now Tourmaline has its own (very much deserved) separate classification.
This gemstone adopted its name from the Sinhalese word “turmali” which translates to “mixed stones”. This is because Tourmaline comes in a wide range of rich colors and sizes.

Tourmaline is said to promote warmth and healing and is known as the ‘Stone of Wisdom’. If you were born in October, it is widely recognised as your birthstone.

The Science

Scientists and geologists alike have been enamored by this is gemstone for some time due to its curious characteristics. Tourmaline is pyroelectric and ferromagnetic, meaning that it contains large electric fields and produces its own magnetic fields!

Tourmaline is naturally found in a magnificent myriad of colors as a result of small differences in chemical composition. The crystal structure of Tourmaline also varies between types but what they do have in common is that they all occur naturally in long thin straight gems and usually have triangular cross-sections.

The Look

Some of the rarest and most expensive forms of Tourmaline include Paraiba, Chrome, and Parti-colored or Watermelon Tourmaline.

  • Paraiba Tourmaline is usually found in striking neon-like blue, green and violet colors. This type of tourmaline is often prized for its colors rather than its size.
  • Chrome Tourmaline is found in intense green colors and contains a similar mineral which makes Brazilian and African emeralds so beautifully green.
  • Watermelon Tourmaline has vivid colors ranging from pink, red and green resembling sliced watermelon where it gets its namesake.
Aside from Tourmaline’s remarkable scientific characteristics, the immensely diverse colorways that this ‘little’ gem exudes allows designers (such as our top designers) to craft the most alluring and sophisticated engagement rings, rings, necklaces and earrings. These statement pieces are adorned by those with a sure sense of self, who wish to be seen.
